Health Challenges introduces to the difference between mental health and mental health challenges, delirium, dementia, communication with clients that have language or speech challenges, sensory challenges and vision problems, and developmental disabilities. The emphasis in this course is on supporting clients with dementia, recognizing responsive behaviours. This course consists of 10 days (50 hours) of daily, participatory learning sessions.
Completion of Assisted Living.
Students are supplied with text books for ongoing reference. In addition to daily quizzes, presentations, individual and group projects, and chapter exams, there is a final exam upon completion of the course. Students must achieve a mark of 75% to successfully complete the course.
Mental Health Challenges: Listing factors that may contribute to mental health challenges, and explaining how to support clients with mental health issues
Confusion, Delirium, and Dementia: Differentiating between confusion, delirium, and dementia, and applying the principles to the care and support of a client with confusion, delirium, or dementia
Speech and Language Challenges: Describing how speech and language challenges are treated, and describing how computers can assist clients with speech challenges
Hearing and Vision Problems: Describing the effect of hearing and vision problems, and how to care for clients with hearing loss and/or vision problems
Development Disabilities: Identifying the areas of functioning limited by developmental disability, and explaining how a developmental disability can affect the client and the family

Course Aim: Students achieve the following learning outcomes: 1) describe ways to organize, administer, and evaluate personcentred care and services for clients experiencing common health challenges, 2) describe ways to organize, administer, and evaluate person-centred care and assistance for clients experiencing cognitive health challenges (dementia), and 3) describe ways to organize, administer, and evaluate personcentred care and assistance for clients experiencing mental health challenges (other than dementia).
Of interest to: Those actively pursuing Health Care Assistant training as part of their life-long career journey, and to provide the opportunity for students to develop the skills required to provide personal support services to clients and their families, and residents in the community, at home, and in long-term care facilities and institutions.
Method of Delivery: Students are enrolled at the campus with a scheduled start date and are supported by a stand-up instructor.
