Community Service Worker - New Brunswick

Community Service and Support Workers provide important assistance to at-need clients while supporting social workers and health care professionals. Community Service & Support Worker Responsibilities

A Community Service and Support Worker administers and implements various social assistance programs and community services, with duties including:
  • assessing clients’ physical, medical, emotional, and behavioural support needs
  • preparing reports, investigating eligibility for social benefits, and referring clients to other social services, if necessary
  • assisting children with special needs
  • providing support for occupational therapists

Required knowledge

A Community Service and Support Worker position requires knowledge in social support, such as:
  • relating effectively and patiently to vulnerable clients
  • comprehending situations to help resolve conflicts
  • life skills workshops, substance abuse treatment programs, behaviour management and youth services programs
  • understanding the issues and interests of the communities involved

General skills

Excellent communication skills are required to be a Community Service and Support Worker. In addition, necessary skills include:
  • Organization to coordinate activities of human service agencies, health care facilities, and other institutions in the community
  • Basic statistic skills for purposes of evaluation and research
