XHTML and CSS Essentials Course Introduction
XHTML and CSS Essentials will teach students to create Web sites using XHTML to mark up the structure of the document, and CSS to dictate how each page element should look. The course is designed to provide a foundation in Web standards, the set of “best practices” established by the World Wide Web Consortium, among other organizations that set the standards for Web development.

Windows Level 1, Microsoft Word Level 1

To provide the student with a thorough understanding on how to create standards-compliant sites using XHTML and CSS.

Course Notes
A Student Guide is provided for this course. Evaluation is based solely on an Academy of Learning College final exam. Participants who receive 75% or higher on their exam will receive a certificate.

XHTML and CSS Essentials Course Breakdown
Lesson 1:
Explore Web development today; Explore the differences between HTML and current standards; Learn to create HTML pages, write basic HTML tags, and structure content; Organize Web site files and use File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
Lesson 2:
Work with HTML tables; Learn to set up data tables for optimal display on browsers and devices; Explore how to create old-school, table-based fixed and fluid layouts and incorporate image slices
Lesson 3:
Understand the requirements for coding pages using XHTML; Learn the basic structure of an XHTML document; Guidelines for testing/validating Web pages; Learn how to fix broken links and images
Lesson 4:
Focus on Cascading Style Sheets (CSS); Examine basic structure of CSS code; Explore fundamentals of setting and manipulating Web page typography; Learn to style page sections using borders, padding, and margins
Lesson 5:
Explore the contemporary use of CSS for layout and positioning; Learn to position block-level elements; Understand how to control visibility, clipping, and overflow of page objects; Essential guidelines for creating fixed and fluid layouts; Troubleshooting tips for CSS positioning

Understand how XHTML page functionality can be extended; Methods to enhance Web scripting studies; Guidelines on organizing CSS for future projects
