Web Design 1 Course Introduction
Web Design 1 provides students with a systematic professional approach to Web design. Students will use site maps, wireframes, HTML/CSS layouts, comps, color palettes, usability tests, and other tools and concepts to make sure that their designs hit the mark. Students will complete four portfolio projects that challenge their Web design skills and build an understanding of how to manage Web design projects in a professional context.
Course Prerequisite(s)
XHTML/CSS Essentials (5228), Adobe Photoshop (PHTSCS3E1 or PHTS70E1), Web Graphics using Fireworks (5016) and Dreamweaver 1 (5300) or equivalent experience.
Course Aim
To provide the student with a professional approach to designing client Web sites.

Course Notes
A Student Guide is provided for this course. Evaluation is based solely on an Academy of Learning College final exam. Participants who receive 75% or higher on their exam will receive a certificate.
Web Design 1 Course Breakdown
Lesson 1:
Web design project overview; Defining a site’s business objectives; Methodology for developing information architecture; Different GUI design conventions
Lesson 2:
The challenge of developing wireframes and layouts; Techniques for creating/validating column layouts in HTML; Preparing page content using CSS
Lesson 3:
Developing visual designs; Creating a formal/informal mood board; Selecting color palettes; Determining how color schemes are implemented to support branding and site navigation; Best practices for using images on the Web; Techniques for combining images with CSS
Lesson 4:
Fundamentals of typeface anatomy; Selecting type faces for different Web page applications; Differences between the Web and print; Concepts for CSS type layout
Lesson 5:
Exploring hot-button usability; How common Web surfing habits affect the placement and usability of site features; Principles for effective Web navigation design; Formal process for conducting usability tests; How to administer focus groups, card sorting, and A/B tests
Lesson 6:
Principles and techniques for building an online portfolio; Fundamental do’s and don’ts for a portfolio; DOM-based methods for a slick presentation
