Medical Receptionist Practical Simulation Course Introduction
The objectives of the Medical Receptionist Practical Simulation is to provide students with the opportunity to analyze situations unique to the occupation, make decisions related to those situations, as well as experience the daily duties and responsibilities associated with the occupation. The course provides students the opportunity to learn and practice basic traditional and computerrelated medical office procedures and skills necessary to work in a variety of medical offices.
Course Prerequisite(s)
Introduction to Medical Terminology and Medical Office Procedures, plus Word Processing, Spreadsheet, and Database courses at a minimum of Level 1. In addition, you need the ability to use a calculator and a computer with a CD-ROM.
Course Aim
Students will develop and apply communication skills such as following instructions from doctors, writing e-mail messages, taking telephone messages, and transcribing reports. In addition, students will also be utilizing their computer and office procedures course material as they will be scheduling appointments, maintaining a time log, creating and maintaining various word processor, spreadsheet, and database applications. Further, they will also be responsible for preparing and processing medical documentation, inventory, and billing.

Those who are interested in a career as a medical receptionist in a doctor’s office, or in medical
environments such as clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, dentists offices, and specialists’ practices.
Medical Receptionist Practical Simulation Course Breakdown
Lab 1:
Preview and Update a Computerized Office Procedures Manual; Reorganize Data Files; Make, Reschedule, Cancel and Follow-Up on Appointments; Create Temporary and Permanent Patient Files; Create a Chart Number Spreadsheet; Create a Computerized Appointment Book; Prepare, Update and Process Daysheets; Process Standard Forms Required in a Medical Office
Lab 2:
Maintain an Appointment Book; Maintain the Patient Filing Book; Bill Medical Plans; Prepare Referral Documentation; Complete Bank Reconciliation; Create Other Spreadsheet, Word Processor and Database Files as Required
Lab 3 & Lab 4:
Continue to Perform Duties that are Typical of a Medical Office; Be Introduced to Various Patients with Differing Ailments, Priorities, and Medical Test Requirements
Course Notes
This course consists of 4 labs that include tasks, scenarios, and audio clips. There is no exam associated with this course. This is a compulsory non-credit course, a required Career Direction component of the Medical Receptionist Diploma. This course can also be combined with the Medical Office Procedures and Introduction to Medical Terminology courses to create a customized certificate program to meet the needs of any student wishing to enter the Medical Receptionist job market.
