Exterior Inspection Course Introduction

This course covers inspection of the exterior of a residential building. The student will get an understanding of how to inspect retaining walls, grounds, window wells, lot grading, driveways, patios, walkways, decks, balconies, stoops and steps, porches, railings, wall cladding, flashing trim, eaves, soffits, fascia, as well as exterior doors and windows. The student is introduced to various architectural styles in North America, including building shapes and details, and specific house styles. Exterior cladding in a residential dwelling, including types of siding material, soffits and fascia, window, doors, and common problems associated with them are covered in this course. The student also learns about external structural and safety components of steps, railings, columns, beams, joists, floors, roofs, skirting, drains, and walls. Surface water control including gutters, downspouts for rainwater collection, window wells, walks, driveways, and grounds are discussed, and the student will learn how to inspect them.

Course Aim

To familiarize the student with procedures involved in performing exterior inspection in residential establishments.

Individuals interested in pursuing a career as home inspectors, in a home inspection firm, starting their own home inspection business, or owning a franchise, and furthering their knowledge of exterior inspection of residential establishments.

Course Notes

Students receive resource material for this course. There are four tests to evaluate student progress. Participants who receive 75% or higher overall will receive a certificate.

Method of Delivery

Learning supported by a qualified off-site instructor; students are provided with course content that includes all of the required courseware, and are supported by a live technical instructor during regular business hours. Students have access to an instructor via e-mail outside of regular business hours.
