Course Introduction

Medical Office Procedures provides students with the front office (administrative) skills to work in a healthcare facility or medical office. Topics include professionalism, teamwork, communication skills, ethics, reception skills, scheduling, medical records, and filing. Students learn the application of skills in a computerized environment, as well as the utilization of paper medical records. This course consists of 15 days (75 hours) of daily, participative learning sessions.

Course Prerequisites

Completion of Anatomy and Physiology Part 2.

Course Notes

Students are supplied with textbooks for ongoing reference. In addition to quizzes, tests, and assignments, there is a Final Exam upon completion of the course. Students must achieve a mark of 75% overall and on the Final Exam to successfully complete the course.

Course Breakdown

Module 1: Federal and Provincial Healthcare Identifying the different types of healthcare professionals and exploring the students’ own provincial healthcare acts, as well as federal portions of the Canada Health Act, including privacy laws.

Module 2: Professional Behaviour and Interpersonal Skills Professional behaviour, time management, first impressions, listening skills, and examples of passive-aggressiveness, aggressiveness, and assertiveness. Exploring how assertiveness skills enhance one’s work experience.

Module 3: Medicine and Ethics Exploring the different aspects of ethical medical practice, different types of ethical problems, how ethical decisions are made, and the importance and legality of medical confidentiality.

Module 4: Telephone Techniques and Scheduling Discovering effective telephone techniques and methods of scheduling to create a patient management timeline and ensure smooth patient flow.

Module 5: Patient Reception and the Office Environment Opening and closing duties, office expenses, purchasing supplies, office emergencies, and how to prepare for the patient’s arrival in the office.

Module 6: Medical Records Identifying different documents in the patient’s chart. SOAP notes, proper filing of medical records, and the advantages and disadvantages of paper and electronic medical records.

Medical Office Software Using an EHR to manage patient records, schedule, submit insurance claims, etc.
