Course Introduction

Healing Needs introduces theory and practice to offer students the opportunity to acquire personal care and assistance skills within the parameters of the HCA role. Students will be encouraged to explore person-centred practice as it relates to common challenges to health, and in particular, end-of-life care. The course is comprised of classes and supervised laboratory experiences that assist the student in integrating theory to develop care-giver skills that maintain and promote the comfort, safety, and independence of individuals in community and facility contexts.

Course Prerequisites

Completion of Health Challenges.

Course Notes

Students are supplied with text books for ongoing reference. In addition to daily quizzes, presentations, individual and group projects, and chapter exams, there is a final exam upon completion of the course. Students must achieve a mark of 75% to successfully complete the course.

Course Breakdown

Assisting with Medications: Summarizing how drugs work in the body, and differentiating between assisting with medication and administering medications

Measuring Height, Weight, and Vital Signs: Listing factors the affect vital signs, and knowing the vital sign ranges for different age groups

Heat and Cold Applications: Identifying the purpose, effects, and complications of heat and cold applications, and listing the guidelines for application of heat and cold

Oxygen Needs: Identifying the signs and symptoms of hypoxia and altered respiratory function, and explaining how to safely assist a client with oxygen therapy

Caring for a Client Who is Dying: Describing the five stages of grief, and describing palliative care

Acute Care: Introducing students to the acute care contexts

  • Program: Healthcare Programs

  • Of interest to: Those actively pursuing Health Care Assistant training as part of their life-long career journey, and to provide the opportunity for students to develop the skills required to provide personal support services to clients and their families, and residents in the community, at home, and in long-term care facilities and institutions.

  • Course duration: This course consists of 11 days (55 hours) of daily, participatory learning sessions.
