Medical Office Assistant with Veterinary Specialty - Alberta

This program provides students with the base knowledge, skills, and work experience to become employable in any medical setting. The Veterinary Administrative Assistant performs many of the same or similar duties as a Medical Office Assistant. Veterinary patients have the same basic body systems and require similar treatment for injuries and illnesses as do humans. By adding the Veterinary Administrative Assistant specialty modules to the core Medical Office Assistant program, graduates have wider employment opportunities by choosing to work in a Veterinary setting or a medical clinic. The skills acquired are:
  • Comprehensive medical administrative knowledge, which includes medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, hospital and medical office administrative and clinical procedures.
  • Specialty Veterinary Administrative Assistant training prepares the student with additional training to work in veterinary clinics and veterinary hospitals.
  • Full range of computer and office skills, including current software applications, keyboarding skills, general office management, accounting.

Admission Requirements

Standard Admission

Students must meet ONE of the following criteria: 1. Alberta High School Diploma, verified by transcript, or non-Alberta equivalent. OR 2. General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.). And ALL of the following criteria:
  1. Successful interview with school administration. (Pharmacy Technician)
  2. Successful result on the Academy of Learning College entrance evaluation.
  3. Apply for a security clearance.

Mature Admission

Students must meet ALL of the following criteria:
  1. Out of school for two years.
  2. Successful result on the Academy of Learning College entrance evaluation.
  3. Fifty credits towards an Alberta High School Diploma, verified by transcript, with 50% or better in a Grade 10 English and a Grade 10 Mathematics, or non — Alberta equivalent.
  4. Apply for security clearance.
OR
  1. Out of school for two years.
  2. Successful result on the Academy of Learning College entrance evaluation.
  3. Successfully complete the CAST Level 3 with Alberta Grade 12 equivalency.
  4. Apply for a security clearance.
