Medical
Office Assistant with Medical Transcriptionist
This program provides students with the base knowledge, skills,
and work experience (preceptorship) to become employable in any medical setting.
Supplementing the core CMAP® program, the Advanced Medical Transcription
Specialty prepares individuals to be medical language specialists.
They interpret and transcribe dictation by physicians and other
healthcare professionals regarding: patient assessment, workup,
therapeutic procedures, clinical procedures, diagnosis, prognosis,
etc., in order to document patient care and facilitate delivery
of healthcare services.
The
skills acquired are:
- A
thorough knowledge of physiology, anatomy, and pathophysiology,
including the terminology used in medical and surgical
procedures.
- Excellent
spelling, editing, and proofreading skills, with a good command
of English grammar, structure and style. The objective is to
become a valued assistant to physicians, surgeons, dentists, and
other medical professionals in producing medical reports which,
in turn, become a permanent record of medical, scientific, and
legal value.
- A
comprehensive knowledge of medical office/hospital
administrative procedures and basic clinical skills; a full
range of computer and office skills, including those for current
software, keyboarding, general office management, accounting,
personal and professional development, and customer service.

Duties
& Responsibilities
-
Transcribing medical dictation to provide a permanent record of
patient care by using knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy
and physiology, pharmacology and other medical specialties to
transcribe and proofread reports.

Demonstrating
an understanding of the medico-legal implications and responsibilities
related to transcribing patient records to protect the patient
and the business/institution.

Operating designated
word processing, dictation and transcription equipment as directed
to complete assignments. This includes using computer and office
skills, including current software applications and designated
transcription software.

Following
policy and procedures to contribute to the efficiency of the medical
transcription department.

Performing
medical office and hospital administrative duties, including basic
clinical procedures such as: basic lab tests, vital signs, medical
asepsis/infection control, CPR/First Aid, assisting with patient
examinations, patient charting and health records, billing and
coding procedures, and hospital census recording.
